An oxidative stress or reaction can produce free radicals, which can cause inflammation and many unfortunate, pathogenic reactions. The chain reaction can cause cell damage and cell death. Antioxidants can end the chain reaction that causes this injury and death of the cell by removing these free radical intermediates and inhibiting oxidative reactions. The antioxidants do that by oxidizing themselves, so antioxidants work as a reducing agent. The excessive generation of electrons is known as oxidative stress, and is believed to play a substantial role in the cause of strokes, heart attacks, neurological disorders and even cancer.
